Can you tell us about yourself and your brand, Gren Design? How did the idea of establishing Gren Design come about, and why did you name it Gren?
We are Ece Kaya and Cüneyt Ahmet Yapalak, the founders of Gren design. Our paths crossed at the ITU Industrial Design department and, even back then, we discovered that we both loved spending most of our time in the department’s workshop and that we had a shared passion for wood. After our training and after gaining experience in various sectors including ceramics, metal, and glass, we established the workshop in 2018. We spent the first years designing, shaping our collections and getting more familiar with the industry and production, especially the furniture and lighting areas. We founded the Gren Design home decoration brand in January 2020. Our aim in setting out on this road was to provide clients with unique and long-lasting pieces – pieces that can be used to create distinctive living spaces. This feels especially important as places are becoming crowded and losing their identity because of the consumption habits of the modern age. In our designs, we consider ergonomics, user experience, and aesthetics as a function and aim for each piece to have a design added value. We offer a well-planned manufacturing process and precise workmanship by undertaking production as well as design.

We know that you usually use wood materials when designing your products. What do you look for in wood selection and design?
In choosing the type of wood, we make sure that its properties are in line with the future product. In this way, we can prevent any cracks or distortions that may come about in the final product and also create longer-lasting products. Since we produce at various scale from furniture to home accessories, we use robust and valuable woods that can preserve fine details. Walnut, which has a timeless appearance in decoration with its beautiful grain, is the wood we use most often. Next come ash and oak. In designing our products, we take care to use forms that reveal their strongest aspects, respecting the nature of each tree.
How do you bring your products to consumers? Do you export overseas?
We serve our customers from our own website and from various online stores. We have a selection of products in different concept stores in Istanbul. We can also send products worldwide through global sales channels.
What are Gren Design’s future plans? Will you branch out into new categories? Are you planning to further develop existing categories?
We continue to be inspired by our environment and thus we generate new ideas. Because of this, we are in an infinite design cycle that we greatly enjoy. Our quest to create inspiring designs in addition to the existing product categories is ongoing. We’ve recently been in the process of launching new products, especially in the lighting category. By adding new materials and production techniques to our range, we aim to be a part of a brand-new story offering products with a strong sense of sincerity.
